How Much Pizza Do We Eat and Healthier Options

Vegetarian Pizza

Pizza is a staple food item for many Americans. It’s often consumed during events that bring people together like parties, sporting events, or even a Friday night. There are so many tasty options to choose from when it comes to pizza!

Our love for pizza leads to a couple of questions: how much pizza do Americans eat? What premium pizza options can families realistically incorporate into their busy schedules and maintain a balanced diet?

Pizza by the Numbers

Here at Milton’s, we love a good pizza night and we’re not alone. According to a national poll, Americans will consume at least 6,000 slices of pizza in their lifetime!

On average, a 75-year-old consumes about 80 slices per year. In addition, the average family eats pizza at home about 30 times a year. That number is growing with many families today serving pizza at home at least once per week—it’s quick, easy and a family favorite.

There are even some diehard pizza fans out there (about 10%) who eat up to three slices of pizza, three times each week. Another smaller subgroup reported eating up to 15 slices of pizza per week.

Crafting the Perfect Pizza

Toppings

Let’s talk pizza toppings! Do you put pineapple in your pizza? There is a lot of debate on this topic, but the best part is you can put whatever you want on your pizza. Here are a few tried-and-true options that you can try to customize your pizza and make it your own.

Meats: A premium meat option is the best kind, and we love our Uncured Pepperoni Cauliflower Crust Pizza

Vegetables: Savory roasted zucchini, bell peppers and onions are our favorite veggies that can be found on our Roasted Vegetable Cauliflower Crust Pizza

Margherita: Roma tomatoes and basil are a dynamite pair especially topped with premium Italian cheese like our Margherita Cauliflower Crust Pizza

Cheese: There is something beautifully simple about a plain cheese pizza like our Four Cheese Cauliflower Crust Pizza. It’s also a great canvas if your family or friends are looking to dress up their pizza using toppings of their own.

Pesto is a great pizza topping – or a blend of roasted garlic, red pepper flakes, and a bit of olive oil. Try sprinkling freshly chopped raw basil to your pizza as garnish before serving it.

If you have an adventurous palate, try topping your Four Cheese pizza with some arugula, goat cheese, and honey to make it sweet and savory. Or if you’re looking for something different, try adding pear slices or uncured ham.

Another creative idea is to combine lean ground beef, turkey bacon, mushrooms, and onions for a classic cheeseburger pizza.

If you like it California-style, top with some grilled chicken, pineapple, barbecue sauce, and grilled vegetables for a riff on a classic.

The options are endless and we encourage you to get creative and try one of our cauliflower crust recipes!

Cauliflower Crust

If your crust isn’t crispy to the bite, your pizza is going to flop. Traditional wheat flour crusts can taste great, but there are other options you can choose from, like cauliflower crust which is also gluten free.

Many are skeptical when they hear of a cauliflower crust pizza, and some may have had a bad taste experience in the past as not all cauliflower crusts are created equal. A good cauliflower crust has a fantastic crispy texture and makes most people say… “Are you sure this is cauliflower crust?”
